England dominated play for the second day during the final Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Resuming at 284 for 4, England put up an impressive 477 on the board. India responded well, finishing the day on 60 for no loss. But, England clearly finished with the upper hand. Here’s a look at significant numbers from the second day’s play.

Liam Dawson made an unbeaten 66 from 148 balls on Test debut. This is the highest score by an England batsman batting at number eight. The previous highest was 59 by David Bairstow, also against India at The Oval in 1979.

Dawson’s 66 is now the highest by an England player on debut batting at number eight or lower. The previous best is 65 by Darren Gough, batting at nine batsman against New Zealand at Old Trafford in Manchester in 1994.

The last visiting player to score a fifty on Test debut in India while batting at number eight or lower was Australia’s off-spinner Gavin Robertson. He made 57 at the same venue as Dawson in March 1998.

Dawson has now become the eighth player to score a fifty while batting at number eight for England. The previous instance of an England number eight making a half-century on debut was when Tim Ambrose made 55 against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2007-08.

Adil Rashid’s 60 is his second fifty in Tests. His highest score is 61 against Pakistan at Dubai in October 2015. The 108-run stand between Rashid and Dawson at Chennai is the second best at the venue, after the 112 added by Imran Khan and Wasim Akram in February 1987.

Saturday was only second instance of two batsmen batting at number eight of lower crossing fifty plus. The previous occasion was when Imran Khan and Wasim Akram made got 135 and 62 respectively, also at Chepauk, back in February 1987. Also, the highest eighth-wicket partnership by a visiting pair in India is 124 by Keith Boyce and Vivian Richards at Delhi in December 1974.

Moeen Ali registered his second highest Test score, making 146 from 262 deliveries. His highest Test score is 155 not out vs Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street in May 2016.

During the course of the innings, Ali became the fifth batsmen from England to score two or more hundreds in a Test series in India

Ravichandran Ashwin has dismissed Ben Stokes five times in the series. He was caught behind on Saturday for 6.

After keeping wickets for 157.2 overs, Parthiv Patel stepped up to open the innings after Murali Vijay could not do so having injured his shoulder. He was at the crease with the bat for 20 overs, remaining unbeaten on 28 from 52 balls.

No visiting team has ever lost a Test in Chennai after posting a total of 400 or more in the first innings, so India will have to rewrite history if they want to win the Chennai Test.
