India dominated day two of the second cricket Test against England at Vizag. After putting up 445 runs on the board batting first, India reduced the opponents to 103 for 5 at the end of day. Here are some interesting stats from Day 2.

Ravichandran Ashwin may be in the team primarily for his bowling, but he already beginning to justify his newly-earned number six slot, albeit temporarily. His 58 from 95 balls was instrumental in India reaching 445. Ashwin has had a pretty decent year with the bat in 2016, with two hundreds and two fifties. He scored 113 and 118 in West Indies, and has scored 70 and 58 in the two Tests so far against England. Ashwin has a very good batting average against England, that of 50.90, with four fifties.

England lost half their side for 80 in the first innings. This is their sixth lowest score in India at the point when they have lost five wickets. The previous instance was when they lost 69 for 5 at Ahmedabad in 2012. The lowest ever is when they lost 35 for 5 at Bangalore in 1976/77.

England’s key batsman Joe Root registered yet another fifty against India. He now has a total of eight fifties against India in 12 innings, a highly impressive conversion rate. Root has seven fifty plus scores against Australia, the next best.

English skipper Alastair Cook was dismissed, bowled by Mohammed Shami for 2. This was only the second instance of him being bowled by a fast bowler in Asia. The last time was actually on his Test debut in 2006, when he was bowled by Irfan Pathan in Nagpur.

Rather surprisingly, Moeen Ali has a very good bowling strike rate against India. In six Tests against India, he had claimed 38 wickets at an excellent strike rate of 47.6. He did not have success with the bat though as he was dismissed for 1.

India have had two successful reviews in the series thus far while England have had none. Cheteshwar Pujara managed to get an lbw decision overturned at Rajkot while debutant Jayant Yadav managed to have a successful review against Moeen in this Test.

Moeen, incidentally, went on to become Jayant Yadav’s maiden Test victim. The middle-order bat struggled for his 1 off 21 balls, and was dismissed lbw to Yadav.

Ben Duckett registered another failure. His Test scores thus far have been 14, 15, 7, 56, 13 and 5.
