England defeated Sri Lanka by 122 runs in the fifth and final ODI of the series at Cardiff. Here’s a look at the match in numbers.

The 122-run victory is England’s second highest over Sri Lanka in terms of runs. The previous best margin was 128 runs at Perth in 1998-99.

England’s 324 for 7 is the second highest one-day total by the hosts against Sri Lanka in one-dayers. Their previous best was 333 for 9 during the 1983 World Cup at Taunton. In a fifty over game, this is England’s highest score against Sri Lanka, beating the 321 for 7 at Headingley in 2006.

Chaminda Bandara conceded 83 runs in his debut ODI innings. This is the most by a player from a Test playing nation on debut, and also by a Sri Lankan on debut. The previous most expensive figures by an ODI debutant from a Test playing nation was 78 by Steven Smith in 2009-10.

The 109 runs added between Joe Root and Jos Buttler is now the highest fifth wicket partnership for England against Sri Lanka. The previous highest was 98 between Root at James Taylor at Wellington during the 2015 World Cup.

Sri Lanka failed to win a single match in the series. This is only the second instance of them not managing to claim victory in even one game in a five-match series. The previous instance was against India in 2014-15.

Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal finished the series with an impressive tally of four fifties in the five-match series, in which one game was rained out.

Not a single Sri Lankan batsman managed to score a hundred in the series. There were a total of 12 fifties in all, by batsmen from the visiting side.

All the top seven from the England batting line-up reached double figures, Root’s 93 being the highest and Chris Woakes’ 17 not out being the lowest.

Three English batsmen crossed fifty in the game – Root 83, Buttler 70 and James Vince 51.

Not a single England bowler conceded in excess of 6 runs per over in the match. Chris Jordan was the most expensive with 5.71 while David Willey was the most economical with 3.92.

Nuwan Pradeep and Suranga Lakmal once again proved expensive for Sri Lanka, conceding 7.37 and 6.50 respectively. Danushka Gunathilaka was the only one who went under 5, conceding 4.80 respectively,

Chandimal was the only one who crossed fifty for Sri Lanka in the match, scoring 53 from 66 runs. Gunathilaka scored as many runs as he gave away with the ball – 48.

Upul Tharanga was the only player to register a first-ball duck in the Cardiff ODI.
