New Zealand asked to bat first after losing the toss struggled to reach 190 for 9 in 50 overs. There was a top order collapse for the Kiwis losing 5 wickets for just 71 runs in 23.4 overs. With none of the top order batsmen delivering, the Kiwis were heading towards a very low total but somehow could reach a modest 190 for 9 thanks to half century from Wicket Keeper BJ Watling (60 from 98 balls with 5 fours). Jacob Oram contributed 32 from 39 balls (with 2 fours and 2 sixes).

Andre RussellFor the West Indies, Andre Russell took 4 for 45 in 10 overs and Ravi Rampaul took 2 for 42. West Indies chasing the target of 191 lost an early wicket of Lendl Simmons to Kyle Mills but there was no further trouble for them after that. The hosts were 93 for 1 in 18 overs before rain interrupted the action and when play resumed, the target was revised to 136 from 33 overs. West Indies took just the 24.2 overs to get there with Chris Gayle scoring 63* (from 77 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes) and Dwayne Smith scoring 65* (from 77 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes).
