With Sri Lanka defeating West Indies by one run in the fifth match of the tri-series in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, we take a look at the five most recent one-run victories in one-day internationals.

Sri Lanka vs West Indies (November 23, Bulawayo): West Indies won the toss, and bowled first. They ended up conceding 330 in their 50 overs. Kusal Mendis blasted 94 from 73 balls while Niroshan Dickwella also hit 94 from 106 balls. Opening the innings, Dhananjaya de Silva made 58 from 60. Jason Holder was the best West Indian bowler with 3 for 57. Evin Lewis made a smashing 148 from 122 balls to lead West Indies’ response. Holder chipped in with the bat as well, but was stranded on 45 not out as West Indies finished with 329 for 9.

India vs South Africa (January 15, 2011, Johannesburg): This was one of India’s rare wins away from home. India made only 190 after winning the toss, and deciding to bat first. Yuvraj Singh made 53 and MS Dhoni 38. Lonwabo Tsotsobe shone for the Proteas with 4 for 22. In response, South Africa were led by Graeme Smith, who made a fluent 73. His dismissal however turned the game, as they went from 152 for 4 to 189 all-out. Munaf Patel was the surprise hero for India with 4 for 29. He picked up Smith before cleaning up the tail.

West Indies vs Pakistan (May 2, 2011, Barbados): West Indies won the toss, and chose to field in the rain-hampered game. Mohammad Hafeez made a brilliant 121 and Asad Shafiq 71, yet Pakistan only managed 248 for 9. Devendra Bishoo shone with 3 for 37. Following rain interruption, West Indies ended on 154 for 4 in 29.5 overs. Lendl Simmons’ 76 was the standout effort while Darren Bravo and Ramnaresh Sarwan chipped in with 20s. West Indies won by one run via the D/L method.

Pakistan vs South Africa (October 30, 2013, Sharjah): South Africa won the toss, and batted first. They were all-out for 183, and had it not been for Wayne Parnell’s 56, things could have been worse. Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi shared seven wickets among themselves. In response, Pakistan were all out for 182 after Morne Morkel cleaned up last man Mohammad Irfan for 2. Ahmed Shehzad was the only Pakistani to cross fifty. For South Africa, both Parnell and Imran Tahir claimed three wickets each, with the former being awarded the man of the match for his all-round show.

South Africa vs Pakistan (November 27, 2013, Port Elizabeth): Just a month later, South Africa and Pakistan again played a thriller. South Africa won the toss, and chose to field first. Thanks to Ahmed Shehzad’s hundred, Pakistan posted a challenging 262 on the board in 45 overs. Dale Steyn stood out for South Africa with 6 for 39. In response, the Proteas fell tantalisingly short this time. They were held to 261 or 6. Hashim Amla made a splendid 98, but fell in the 44th over, as South Africa went through another heartbreak.
